Thanks for that post ag47. I've looked at coyote and fox sounds, and some of them are similar but this thing is definitely different. It sounds bigger for one, at least to me.

Con- It sounds bigger to me too. I've heard some coyotes live, but not a lot. I listened to several online and they all sound higher-pitched.

Definitely, it's fairly bigger and, honestly, it sounds like it could be a little bit scared too but I obviously can't say for certain. Could just be my imagination.

No problem Con! I don't think that scream is coyote. I might just live in a coyote den, they are outside my door frequently....just followed up the tracks of 5-6 of them in the last snow... so I hear them often and they don't sound like fox. I had heard the recording ag47 linked some time ago and thought it sounded fox-like. This newer one has some depth to it but I've been impressed by how a fox can belt it out. I watched one last Fall, relatively close. I had heard the scream and went looking. I found it up on a ledge and got within approximately 40 yds and just listened for 3-4 min as it carried on before trotting off. When they scream like that at night, in the quiet, it can be quite unsettling if you don't know it---well, it's actually a bit unsettling even if you do.
As i stated before, it's difficult for me to be certain from the recording but who knows...happy hunting:)

Very interesting, thanks for sharing trolljergen. I've heard foxes can sound terrifying, thankfully I've never lived where they were around. Actually, going off on a tangent, where I lived abroad there were supposed to be foxes, small deer and hedgehogs, but in my four years of hiking and trail running I didn't see a single one. I imagine with the hunting there they'd be pretty thinned out but still, I found the lack of actual wildlife (apart from snakes and lizards) odd. Kind of reminds me of the dogman tales where they thin out animal populations of where they live, but given the amount of hunting the people did, it could just as easily be mundane.
On a side note, I found the posted video through Chills on YouTube I believe, either him or Top5's. Those guys actually do some good stuff on freaky things like this if anyone's interested.

Hey all...
I just wanted to say that these sounds really, really remind of foxes. I'm no expert but they truly do sound like fox calls I have heard around the area here in the NW of my country.

The sequence of events is reminiscent of a hunter using a call to draw in predators such as coyotes and foxes.
Just a thought since whatever it was didn't seem to be aware of the person with the gun before they fired, which usually means steps were taken to mask their presence such as camouflage and cover scent.

whitefeather do you think it was the creature trying to draw in prey, or a human hunter?

All I have to judge by is my own hunting experience, which tells me that the sounds are those of a predator using the vocalizations of a wounded animal to draw in prey. I'm certain that at least one player in that series of events was human based on the gunshots, that doesn't mean that a human hunter couldn't have drawn in another, perhaps larger predator.
This exact thing happens fairly often to hunters who use calls. I know of turkey hunters who've called in coyotes, bobcats, and even fishers (think big weasel), rather than the turkeys they were after. It's also not unheard of for coyote hunters in the western states to call in wolves instead, and once in a while a curious bear.
If you'll allow me a personal anecdote. One time while I was bow-hunting whitetail deer a randy male skunk became quite infatuated with the doe-in-heat cover scent that I had on my boots. The result was a mad dash pursuit of several hundred yards, the details of which I'll leave to your imagination.

Creepy as all hell but I want to say I've heard it before. My wife says she's heard it a lot over in eastern wa and it's just coyotes. I'm not an expert though.

I haven't heard that many coyotes, so I'm no expert. I was thinking it didn't sound high-pitched enough to be coyote(s). Whatever it was, it gave me goosebumps. I've walked out in my yard on a summer's night and heard all kinds of blood-curdling vocalizations, most of which I (eventually) associated with various small animals. One or two I never identified. There was a snarling critter making its' way through the wooded patch across the road toward me one night and I just "decided" it was time to go back inside, lol.

However, don't hyenas kinda laugh like that too though?

They do. I've never heard them except on recordings. It's some weird stuff, imho.

Definitely. If something was sounding off like that in my back yard I'd probably shoot at it too, just to make some noise to get it to shut up. I feel like a gunshot would make coyotes run, however this one did not...
