ThinkerThunker has a good understanding, it's easy for the layman to follow along. I used to analyze speed runs and one of the things I would look at specifically was sound because if someone spliced footage together we will have very short maybe 1ms duration of silence. Something I find interesting that first unknown sound really sounds like a some of the DM examples on the NADP's site. I wish that places where strange sounds being recorded we can get a recording just of general quite maybe a few test sounds perhaps even one day we may have multiple microphone arrays, from experience some sounds may sound strange with the right geographical terrain.
Edit: Just wanted to add from research I have learned that scientists use recorders out in the wild to get an idea of a population of an animal which they are studying. Also I have learned that animal calls tend to be "processed" identifying the calls of said species being studied, maybe we can do similar things.
