For future reference, if anyone is told (by LE/Authority Figures) to delete pictures, it's fine delete them but turn off the phone immediately afterwards. Basically cooperate, keep yourself and family safe, being able to keep the device is the goal. Unallocated space must be preserved and data can be recovered even if deleted (this also applies to sdcards/hard drives), hence why turning off the device. Often memory is written and re written, deleting a file most operating systems just remove the first character of the header of a file (headers identify the file type) and typically the sectors or media is written and re-written which means that if we lose the end of file now we are just guessing at the beginning and end of files (read as impossible so turn off the device immediately). If one is in this position keep it mind that some here do digital forensics. Just in case immediately back up to an sdcard if that option is available and hide that sdcard, hide it covered in a baggie and place it in a food item. Yes some canines (used by LE) can smell electronics (eg electronics like phones) if it's hid in say a peanut butter jar .. it's just a hungry dog at this point. Be smart and remember that recovery is often possible unless say the phone was tossed in a fire then dogman used it as a chew toy then took it to the ocean and left it there for a month then returned it, at this point yeah it's probably not going to happen.
